Africa as the Family Destination
Our founder, Karin Jones, was interviewed for an article Families Can Bond on a Safari in Africa*
*That’s her family on safari in the pictures above…
Here are some tips from that story:
- Take children 8 and above
- Try Malaria-free safari areas
- Family-style tents & rooms designed to sleep four or more
- Private safari villas are available at many camps where families have a private lodge, pool, and vehicle for game drives
- Ideal stay with younger children is three nights per location.
Elevate Your Family Travel Adventures
- When staying at most Singita camps, families of four or more are given a complimentary private vehicle.
- Ol Malo House as guests of Rocky & Colin Francombe together with their adult kids Andrew and Julia — families share a slice of Kenya’s ranch life at the foot of Laikipia Plateau. In addition to safari activities, try camel riding, mountain biking or a visit to the nursery school. Or a sleepout in the Loisaba Star Beds!
There is a lot of adventure to be had in Africa’s cities and coastal areas as well. Break up your trip with a combination of activities:
- In Cape Town hike Table Mountain, see the African penguins at Boulders Beach and visit Robben Island, the prison that housed Nelson Mandela for 25+ years.
- Victoria Falls is great for families with teenagers to enjoy river rafting, bungee jumping, helicopter and other soft adventures.
- Head to the beach after a few days of early-morning game drives. Alfajiri Villa, on the Kenya coast, is all-inclusive, exclusive use, and offers nannies and a white sand beach. And maybe a chance to spot a nesting sea turtle.
- There is always another exciting activity for kids on safari – from planting trees to cooking with the safari chefs. And we know the spots where they welcome kids, rather than merely tolerating them.
